The Cemetery
The current access to the Cemetery, adjacent to that of the convent, to the correct intermediate roll of the access stairway to the church, leads to the last room concerning the original succession, whose entrance was at the foot of the stairway that descends from the landing of the cells. Therefore, the current visit route is a backward direction from the primitive one, which started from the small door now at the end of the corridor.
The Cemetery consists of six rooms, entirely decorated with floral designs in the Rococo style, made with human bones. Part of them was moved there in 1631 when the remains of about four thousand Capuchins were transported to the new convent from that of S. Bonaventura via Dei Lucchesi.
But the decoration is much later: it is believed that it was carried out in 1793-94 by a group of French Capuchins. They fled to Rome during the anti-religious persecutions of the Terror and perhaps segregated here as “fugitives” by Canon Law. from Alatri.

One of the historians, Giorgio da Riano, who is also responsible for the definitions of the individual rooms cited below, recalls P. Raffaele da Roma, painter and author of some paintings in the present church and convent.
To today’s visitor, the decoration may appear macabre or even
“terrorist” is actually of airy levity, typical of eighteenth-century Rococo, and has flowers, light, and Death as recurring themes. The theological significance of these combinations is evident: Death, which cuts the flower of earthly life with its scythe, makes it flourish again in eternity in the light of
Risen Christ

As we have already argued in an article (Gabriella Cattaneo di Ciaccia, The Triumph of Sister Death in “Franciscan Italy” 61 [1986] 613-624), Franciscan spirituality, and in particular the Capuchin one, living with extreme serenity the relationship with Death and daily familiarity with its contemplation, in the light of Christian hope; this explains the use of human bones for the creation of a work of art which must be understood not only as a monument to Death but also as a hymn to the Resurrection.
Primovano
In the articles made up of skulls and long bones lie mummified bodies (using the particular desiccant quality of the sand used for the floor, according to Domenico da Isnello), dominated
by the symbol of Death: skull and crossed femurs. On the back wall, the canvas depicting the Resurrection of Lazarus harmonizes with the constant reference, beyond Death, to the Resurrection. Like all the paintings in the Cemetery, this too is of an unknown eighteenth-century artist and of uncertain origin; it is assumed that they were already on-site at the time of the construction of the work.
The vault with flowers and mixtilinear frames of sacred and vertebrae is perfectly Rococo in taste.
Second room: Expiatory chapel
It is the only paved room containing non-Capuchin burials: the numerous tombstones (absent in the rest of the Cemetery, in homage to Franciscan simplicity) identify some powerful patrons, such as Piero Bargellini, patriarch of Jerusalem, Giuseppe Matteo Orsini, M. Felice Peretti, etc.
At the center of the back wall, an altar, surmounted by a canvas depicting the Madonna Della Misericordia, towards which three friars raise the souls in purgatory (Felice da Cantalice, Francesco d’Assisi, Antonio di Padova). The salvific mediation of Mary makes use, in turn, of the mediation of the Franciscan saints.
Third room: “of the skulls.”

The arches, formed by the skulls, are curvilinear, the sign of only the wall on the back, mummified bodies standing, bent forward, in a gesture to Death, represented here by the hourglass in sign (the wings are sacred).
Still, floral elements, rose windows, frames of various kinds of bones in the vault, against the heaviness of the walls set against the walls Fourth room: “of the basins.”
The decorative element that characterizes this environment is given by light hanging vertebrae, almost dancing. To decorate the back of the arcosoli and the opposite wall.
Among the decorative elements of the vault, next to the usual rose windows, eight-pointed stars appear, which are also repeated as hooking aspects of almost all the lamps in the passage corridor; made up of two crusades, they indissolubly link the theme of the Cross and that of light, recalling that Christ crucified is “lux Mundi.”
Fifth compartment: “of the shins?
It is the largest room with the wealthiest decoration. On the bottom part, with a complex design of long bones, skulls, and sacred items, he compares the emblem of the Capuchin Order (two crossed arms) together with the Cross. The vault is richly decorated with rosettes and flowers.
Sestovano: “of the Princess”
According to tradition, the skeleton in the vault’s center would belong to Princess Barberini. And
