The fountain was designed by the architect Fontana in 1585 for Pope Sixtus V, whose coat of arms may be seen surmounting the monument. The statue of Moses in the centre is a weak work by Bresciano who said to have died broken hearted over the criticism excited by his work. In the niches are two bas-reliefs representing episodes taken from the Old Testament.
