It was built by the Emperor in 28 B.C. as a burial place for himself, all the members of the Claudian-Julian Family, and their familiar servants.

The entrance faced the South and was decorated by an imposing vestibulum richly ornamented and having an obelisk on each side; these obelisks were found and are now one opposite the Quirinale Palace (Palazzo Quirinale), the other in Esquilino Square (Piazza dell’Esquilino).

The excavation has also brought to light the original sepulchral chamber, which has recently been reported to the study and admiration of the public.
At the entrance on the right, a modern inscription may be seen that states: In this Mausoleum, erected by him, was buried Emperor Augustus with his wife Livia, his sister Octavia, his son-in-law Agrippa Domma, Drusus, brother of Tiberius, with his son Germanicus and her sons, and other personages of the Imperial Family.
Inside are several inscriptions, some originals, and copies of the originals, now preserved in different museums.
An inscription on the Tomb of Marcellus and his mother, Octavia, sister of Augustus, may also be seen.
