Rome’s Jewish population dates back 22 centuries ago, when the first Jews came to Rome and settled their first community. The Ghetto was established in 1555 and was controlled by the papacy until the Italian Unification (Capture of Rome) in 1870, which defeated the Papal States. The area where the Jews lived was surrounded by walls and had three gates that were locked at night.
Rome Jewish Ghetto | The area of Rome, chosen for the ghetto, was one of the most undesirable quarters of the city, subject to floods of the River Tiber. The papacy imposed on Jews a range of new restrictions, for example, prohibition on property ownership and practicing medicine on Christians. The Papal States ceased to exist on 20 September 1870 when they were integrated into the Kingdom of Italy. With this, the obligation that Jews live in the restricted comes to an end. The ghetto walls were torn down in 1888, and the ghetto was almost completely demolished. Because of the more than three hundred years of segregation from the rest of the city, the Jews of Rome Ghetto developed their dialect, known as Giudeo-romanesco. Today, the quarter of the former Jewish Ghetto is the home of the Synagogue of Rome. There is one remaining part of its wall, which was built into the wall of one of the courtyards off the Piazza Delle Cinque Scole. Our tour will allow you to visit the authentic neighborhoods of Trastevere and Portico d’Octavia, see the diversity of its complex history, architecture, and tradition.
