Palazzo Margherita in Rome | USA Embassy in Rome | Private Tours in Rome
Palazzo Margherita Ludovisi, built on the project of the architect Gaetano Koch between 1885 and 1890, is located in the famous Via Veneto (La Dolce vita). Its architecture recalls the most famous and ancient Palazzo Farnese (1517), where Antonio Sangallo the Younger and Michelangelo Buonarroti worked.
Built after the unification of Italy (1872), it has been the seat of the Embassy of the United States of America (U.S.A.) since 1946. The palace was built within the 25 hectares of Villa Ludovisi park within the Aurelian walls.
Today in that beautiful park, only the garden of Palazzo Margherita remains. At the beginning of 1900, it became the property of the Savoy family and the residence of Queen Margherita until 1926. A plaque recalls that in this building, Queen Margherita set up a hospital to treat and care for the war wounded on the occasion of the First World War.
Inside this imposing palace are many works of art, including the only work by Giambologna present in the capital, the statue of Venus Cesarini (1583).
The palace was built, including the pre-existing “Palazzo Grande” of the Orsini family. Today, with the famous Casino dell aurora, these two buildings are the last testimony of the previous Villa Ludovisi. The façade of Palazzo Margherita has a portal and three arches that support a balcony, and all the frames and windows are decorated with the Boncompagni family coats of arms.
