GARDENS OF THE VILLA D’ESTE IN TIVOLI: It took 20 years for the Neapolitan architect Pirro Ligorio to create the gardens of the villa of the ambitious cardinal Ippolito d’Este (the pope sent the ambitious cardinal here – a kind of papal slap – in 1550). The site was an ancient monastery. The Monastery was rebuilt, greatly enlarged, and decorated with frescoes; its rear loggia, or loggia, overlooked a steep slope and the plain towards Rome.

To build Villa d’Este in Tivoli, Ligorio had an entire medieval village cleared and terraced to make room for a classic Italian garden and then built a half-mile (750 meters) long aqueduct to bring water from the River Aniene to feed the fountains

Five hundred fountains were built, most with marble and stone from the nearby Villa Adriana’s excavations to decorate the garden’s new layout. Henry James said it became “a wonderful romantic hodgepodge.” Today, we can walk under the same tall cypresses that he and Franz Liszt admired, and you can hear, like them, the music of the waters that gush, dance, cascade, gurgle, sizzle.

Villa d’Este in Tivoli Walk along Viale Delle Cento Fontane for the best views, or stop near the central Dragon Fountain, whose main jet stands in the center of a splendid double staircase. The four dragons that surround the fountain, versions of heraldic monsters from the coat of arms of Pope Gregory XIII, were placed here for his visit in September 1572.

Maintenance is constant, and thanks to the last necessary conservation intervention today, many of the fountains, for many years not working, have been reopened, giving incredible water effects that, especially on hot summer days, offer a natural refreshment with the steam they emit. The gardens are located just an hour’s drive from the center of Rome and are best seen in the morning, so we suggest you book a guided tour.
